Biochemistry may be defined as the study of the molecular basis of life. Biochemists have established several principles that are central to our understanding of living organisms:

• cells, the basic structural units of all living things, are highly organized
• living processes consists of hundreds of chemical reactions
• ceratin fundamental reaction pathways are found in all living organisms
• all organisms use the same type of molecules
• the instructions for growth, development and reproduction are encoded in an organism’s nucleic acids
